After a ten day trip in the northern part of Thailand we stayed for 6 days in the Pimalai Resort and Spa. We have already been to many five star resorts all over the world and Pimalai is going to be one in our "top threes". Summary:

- transfer from and to Krabi airport with high standard buses and ships
- staff extremely friendly and helpful
- many different restaurants within the resort
- enough deck chairs at any pool and the beach
- free water and small juice refreshments at the beach and the pool
- water sport equipment free of charge!!! (snorkeling equipment, wave boards, surf boards, sailing ships and even a katamaran)
- internet connection in the rooms (wire), the lobby (wireless) as well as internet stations in the library

If you want to go for authentic thai food at a very good price we highly recommend the "Same, same but different" located adjacent to the Pimalai for lunch and/or dinner. Just walk about 100 metres on the beach towards the left and you will find this lovely beach restaurant (our favourites dishes were "fried chicken with cashew nuts" and "fried beef with chilli and holy basil"). Take an aperitif and watch the sundown on the beach and move back to the restaurant for eating.

Myself and 5 others stayed at the pimalai for 7 nights. It was our first trip to thailand.
The pimalai just cant be faulted, its was the most beatiful place i have ever stayed in.The grounds ( or should i say rainforest) that its built into is kept looking lovely, very neat and tidy.
The staff were fantastic, so friendly, will do anything for you, they bow everytime you walk past them ( which took me a while to get used to).
The hotel is very big and you can get a private golf buggy to take you were you want to go, i would really recommend getting a buggy to take you up to the pool at the top of the resort! The pool is set near all the private villas, it is beautiful, the views from up there are incredible, try to get up there for when the suns setting.
The rooms are kept lovely and tidy and the very nice toiletries replaced every day.The bathroom is lovely and big and the shower outside is fantastic!
I would def recommend the pimalai to everyone who likes a bit of luxury, im itching to get back there already.

This resort is a basically a mix of two properties, one built approx 20 years ago near the coast and a newer block of villas and reception/restaurant/pool area on the hillside. The newer villa properties are truly very lovely but are almost totally inaccessible on foot, one needs a golf cart to be transported up practically vertical slopes to the villas from the beach and restaurant areas and walking down to the resort facilities is quite hazardous.

Housekeeping is not quite as good as it could be when taking into account how expensive these villa properties are.

The staff are quite charming but the resort itself requires a one hour car drive plus one hour boat drive to reach same and once in the resort there is virtually nothing outside. As there are so many beautiful resorts in this part of the world, we do not think this resort was worth all the effort.

To sum up, it is really quite a basic resort when in comparison whith other 'five star resorts' in the Far East, the quality of the food being really only quite average too with little choice of food outside the resort apart from couple of chinese eateries nearby on the beach.

We experienced yet another fantastic holiday arranged by our tour operator Essential Escapes & Tots too!

This time around we travelled as a mixed group of 10 ladies and guys to Thailand and under Essential Escapes recommendation, we were advised to incorporate a stay at the Pimalai Resort & Spa in Koh Lanta. This time around rather than staying in hotel rooms which the hotel also has, we wanted to have a bit more privacy within our private pools to allow us to spend time together as it had been ages since we all met up and this was a special reunion. The villas were so SPACIOUS, with massive oversized bathrooms with twin sinks, large glass shower and separate bath tub with a dressing area. The bedroom led to a private courtyard complete with day beds and pool which was where we spent most of the time lazing, soaking up the sun and enjoying our views. The pool area was the central point of the villa and even those of us in a three bedroom villa, had our own privacy as our ensuite bathroom and bedroom area was located in its own wing. As the villas were landscaped horizontally and are dotted around the hillside, the views greeted us from each part of the villa. In total we had 4 Pool Villas between us, 1 three bedroom villa, 2 two bedroom villas and 1 one bedroom villa.

When we arrived, we were greeted with trays of iced herbal tea and beautiful necklaces made from the local flowers which must have took ages to make, but smelt so beautiful. Check-in seemed to take only minutes before we were driven to our villas and before we could blink our luggage arrived. I know I can speak for all of us when I say that we all found the villas to be simply stunning - contemporary thai decor to a five star standard. The beauty of having our own villas (not that we EVER cooked) is that the kitchen was always 100% stocked up and was a proper fully equipped. Our large fridges were also fully stocked up for our convenience. If we did not feel like going to the restaurant and wanted to laze and entertain ourselves we could do so. In fact, one night we had the staff cook a fantastic dinner six course dinner with wine we had chosen which was simply divine. The staff were so attentive and extremely polite and accommodating and could not be faulted. On the occasions that we did order room service, I was amazed at how fast the room service came to us with fresh piping hot food.

The food is another aspect of the holiday that will always remain fresh in our minds. We experienced as much Thai food as possible and the Thai Green Curry did it for me every time! At the Pimalai, we had the choice of 4 restaurants and 5 bars and the general consensus from our group is that every morning we looked forward to having breakfast as there was something for everyone. Our dining experiences at the Pimalai were great.

Although I have been to Thailand before, never before had I seen such a fantastic long expanse of white sand - pure heaven. The beach and pool played a huge role in our stay, however so did the Spa! The choice of treatments and special oils, the calming ambiance and the location of the Spa make it feel like you have entered a spiritual garden. I had four spa treatments in one week which always followed by my having a snooze immediately after as I was so relaxed. The Thai really know how to make you relax.

What I also noticed during my stay was that the hotel appealed to families, honeymooners, groups of friends, divers, singletons and spa enthusiasts. We did meet a family down on the beach who had an adorable three year old Sam who was attempting to build his own sandcastle even though the bucket was much too big for him. Sam alternated between the beach and the cute children's play room which is only a stone throw away from the beach. Although not openly advertised, children's play facilities can be arranged. So the hotel suits a wide range of travellers. Over all, the Pimalai is an amazing place.

It was one of the best holidays we have had and we all have great pictures to remind us during the years to come. I will certainly be in touch with Essential Escapes for next year's holiday once we have decided where in the globe we would like to go! Possibly India or Mauritius or a destination which would allow us to combine Thailand with another part of Asia? There are so many options which I look forward to discussing with my travel gurus.

I have been meaning to write a review about this hotel for over a year now, our visit there still seems like yesterday. I often find myself driving to work and wishing I was back there...it's only since my return from there that I have realised how lucky I am to have been somewhere so amazing.

The hotel is beautiful, we went out of season and it was quiet. We were also lucky with the weather during the rainy season and most days found ourselves as the only sunbathers around the hotels stunning infinity pools. We didn't find the food to be the best here for the price that we paid. Instead, we opted for a bit of adventure and went down to the Why Not Bar along the beach most nights and also visited the restaurant that is on the hillside (I can't remember the name). The atmosphere here is what I imagine to be the real Thailand that so many travellers have been seeking for many decades now. The staff at the Why Not Bar look like something straight out of a tribal painting...they sit cross legged, sing and just generally resemble a Thai Red Hot Chilli Peppers tribute band. We had many a good night at the bar and felt like travellers but had the luxury of a comfortable bed and great breakfast the next day - cheating I know but I don't mind. The wildlife is amazing also and we were lucky enough to see the giant lizard in the tree on the way up to the bar, it was fantastic.

The speed boat was a great touch and I would recommend paying the extra for a return, we did the ferry on the way back to go to Koh Phi Phi and wished that we were flying through the sea on a nice boat!

My husband and I like visiting smaller less touristy locations and both Ko Lanta and and Pimalai were exactly what we were looking for. We spent 5 nights at Pimalai and would have stayed longer had we not had arrangements to travel to another part of Thailand.

POOLS and BEACH
The resort is perfect - quiet and beautiful and even at full capacity it never felt crowded. The infinity pools are gorgeous and the beach while not white sand is nice. As others mentioned, we were always able to get loungers at the pool or the beach.

ACCOMMODATIONS
We had found a great deal through asiatravel.com that gave us 2 nights free, plus upon arrival, we were upgraded from a regular room to a Beach Pavilion Suite. Having now stayed in the Pavilion, if we return I would gladly dig into my pockets for this room.

The Pavilion is right on the beach with our own access and loungers. We had a separate reception room which was a huge bonus and a great place to watch a movie or have dinner . Note that Beach Deluxe rooms do not have the large deck or reception room. Sliding doors open all the way, turning it into an open air living room. Our large deck had 2 loungers, a set of chairs and small table. Absolutely amazing, we really felt no need to hang out anywhere else at night especially since our fridge was big enough to hold all the singha's we needed (courtesy of the 7/11 down the road).

Towels on our deck were replenished daily as was bottled water in our fridges. We occasionally received fruit and cookies, but not regularly (in fact it was quite random).

MEALS
Breakfast is a delicious buffet with every nationality's cuisine covered. Being there for 5 nights, we did eat at the hotel's thai restaurant, Spice and Rice, one night which was good. It's Western prices, so expect mains around $10 or 350 baht but alcohol was ridiculously expensive. If you stay in the beach pavilion, I'd suggest ordering room service and using your own alcohol. Same price and just as beautiful a setting.

Other nights we ate at Same Same but Different and Baan Pimalai's restaurant. Both were good and inexpensive, but take note that service seems to stop by 9:30 PM.

AMENITIES
The library is small but has free DVDs and books for you to borrow and 2 computers with internet to use. However, the library for the pool villa resort is much larger and a place you'd want to lounge in.

There is a fitness center which I looked at but didn't use. You can also borrow bikes from the resort in addition to swimming gear.

DIVING
We chose not to go diving with Pimalai, which was more expensive and instead went with Lanta Diver. They picked us up from the hotel (albeit early) and dropped you back at the end of the day. I can not praise them enough, they were friendly, laid back and completely professional. We had our own instructor and did 4 open water dives to complete our open water certification over 2 days. A terrific time!

STAFF
Staff are lovely, polite and courteous, always stopping and saying hello whenever you pass them - they are part of what makes the resort special. In fact, Pimalai makes a point of hiring local staff and providing them with training (such as English) in order to better and broaden their skills

OVERALL
We had an amazing time at Pimalai and never got bored. In fact, at our next resort (Indigo Pearl in Nai Yang) we were bored in 3 days and keep comparing our stay to Pimalai. Go, you won't regret it.

he world. The resort is divided into villas and resort accomodation and we were staying in the resort. The rooms were lovely just look on the website and you'll see. The staff were friendly and genuine and nothing seemed too much trouble. The Spa is fabulous and well worth a visit even if just to see the Koi Carp in the fish pond. I have stayed at several 5* hotels before and I can say that this is a relaxing 5*. Not stuffy and formal so for those who want to kick off their shoes, stay in a lovely resort on a beautiful and quiet island then this is for you. Even thought it is a quiet resort there is the option of joining in the backpacker scene if you fancy straying from your 5* resort. There are a few bars and restaurants within easy walking distance which gives you a bit of variety and I have to mention Same Same but Different as we ate there 3 nights out of 7 and the food was great. I would even recommend booking it was that popular. Overall a brilliant experience.
